Abstract

Objective: The current study intended to examine the association between personality traits and cognitive emotional regulation among individuals with substance use disorder.

Study Design: A cross sectional research design was used in this study.

Place and duration of Study: The sample for this study was taken from Rehab Home Faisalabad from January 2023 to August 2023.

Patients & Methods: This study was conducted with a sample of patients with substance use disorder undergoing rehabilitation N=110. The participants’ age range was between 18 to 50 years. As per marital status, married n=70 (63.6%), unmarried n=30 (27.3%) and divorced n=10 (9.1%) men were selected. People from both joint n=70 (63.63%) and nuclear n=40 (36.36%) family system were assessed. Socio-economics status with three levels; lower economic status, middle economic status and higher economic status were also included. Employed n=74 (67.27%) and unemployed n=36 (32.72%) both were assessed. Data was collected through a purposive sampling approach. Big Five Inventory (John & Srivastava, 1999) Urdu version (Raiha, 2012) and The Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Garnefski, et al., 2002) Urdu translated version (Shehzad, 2020) were used to collect the data. Descriptive, Pearson correlation matrix analysis, and one-way multivariate analysis of variance were performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS-IBM version 26.0) to analyze the data.

Results: Results revealed that a significant correlation was found among study variables. Conscientious personality traits have a significant negative correlation with maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation domain. Neurotic individuals have positive association with negative cognitive emotion regulation. Individuals with substance use disorder score high on neuroticisms and openness to experience as compared to extraversion, conscientiousness, and agreeableness.

Conclusion: The research findings demonstrate that patients with SUD having neuroticism, Openness to Experience and Extroversion personalities have difficulty regulating their emotions as compared to patients with conscientiousness or agreeableness.
